2021 Digital Yearbook

Tracy Wygant – Portland, Oregon

I have recently retired from 36 years of teaching middle school math in both public and private schools in the Portland area. The last 21 years of my career were at a private Jewish Day School where I got to take several trips to Israel with our 8th graders. My husband and I have two grown “kids” both going into medicine. We enjoy living in the Pacific Northwest, taking advantage of great hiking, skiing and rafting. Having family all over the states takes us on many trips to CA, NM, and MN. My mother still lives in Los Gatos, and I get to visit her regularly. New retirement activities include, taking up beekeeping, learning to paddle board, volunteering at a furniture bank, and fostering kittens for the Humane Society. Looking forward to lots more travel and adventure when my husband retires in a couple more years.

Tom Shafer – Los Gatos

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 45 years since we graduated, and I admit that I’ve never missed a reunion. Strangely enough, I’ve never left town. I’ve been here since 1962 and started Nursery School soon after my family came here from Pennsylvania, with a short stay in Southern CA before finding our beloved Los Gatos. I went to college locally and then started a career in real estate after graduating.. A few years later, in 1986, when my father died suddenly, I had the chance to continue my family business, which also includes income tax and Notary work. We are now starting our 60th year. I did some traveling, wandered into and out of a marriage, and fulfilled my childhood dream of being an auto enthusiast. My adventures as an amateur motor vehicle historian have gotten me published now and then and taken me to Yellowstone National Park 10 times. I have driven a privately owned 1937 bus for several visits on a tour of the Park. The Yellowstone friends also landed me a chance to work behind the scenes 6 times in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena – riding in the Parade in 2010, and in 2016, getting to introduce Ken Burns, Grand Marshal, to the vehicle in which he and his family were going to ride. For fun and charitable use, I bought a 1975 Cadillac ambulance to run Code 3 in many fundraisers for burned burned children, my favorite charity. Another milestone was finding and buying the former LGHS 1952 Crown school bus #4 and donating it to the Pacific Bus Museum in Fremont. The bus returns for the Los Gatos Christmas Parade, to transport our retired teachers to a cheering crowd. I also spent several years as a caregiver, and presently, in addition to my work, I enjoy more traveling and finding interesting things and places between the West Coast and my original East Coast roots. Watch for me in a future Christmas Parade with my 1962 Studebaker pickup truck – I have been quoted as saying, “Why watch the parade when you can be in it!”. Hail, once again, to dear Los Gatos High!

Cindy Boyle and Leyton Howard
Milledgeville, Georgia

Life has changed a lot since our last reunion! Both of our daughters got married a year apart from each other and both were destination marriages! Cha Ching!!! We sold our LG townhome in 2019, I retired after 23 years of teaching and we moved to Milledgeville, Georgia. We bought a historic 1835 Antebellum farmhouse on 71 acres and then proceeded to restore/remodel the home. Leyton loves working the land, mowing, tending our many pecan trees, planting new plants and we endear ourselves to the abundance of wildlife. I help with gardening, harvesting pecans, moving mulch, rocks and during the school year, substituting at Georgia Military College. Life is everything we imagined it to be and more!!

Tom Ross – Morgan Hill, CA

I proposed to my 6th grade crush, Katherine Taylor at our 40th reunion! We got married 10/7/17 and have been having a great time! I have a son, Roberto who is 14 and will be going to LGHS in Sept. Katherine has 2 great ‘kids’ who are Braden, 37 and Sara, 30. I have been working at IBM on the z/OS COBOL compiler for 38 years, and have become ‘famous’ in a small circle of System z people (COBOL programmers around the world) and have been given the nickname Captain COBOL. I think it is hilarious, so I even have a Captain COBOL sign on my office door and you can find me on LinkedIn and many computer conferences as Captain COBOL as well. Not retired yet, hopefully in 2024!

Bret Waters – Redwood City, CA

I’ve done the Silicon Valley tech startup thing a few times over the years. I have two great daughters from my first marriage, and my wife Britt-Marie has 5 kids from her first marriage, so we now have a large Brady Bunch, aged 23 to 32. I do a little teaching at Stanford, a little startup investing, and spend time in the woodshop trying to improve my skills without losing too many fingers.

Jeffrey L. Bates, Redwood Estates

After LGHS, I went to work for The ex drummer of the Doobie Brothers (Mike Hossack) and his Band, setting up stages around the valley and then working the recording studio ..then moved to sound systems, lighting and portable DJ systems (Disco Days) toured with the likes of James Brown, Willie, Merle , Freddie, Ricky Nelson, Jerry Jeff and a few others. Then when that was getting old ( a roadie’s life is so romantic) I went to work for Varian Associates in Palo Alto and travelled the world installing Capital Equipment, then after 20 years in Semiconductor Manufacturing around the world, In 2000 I left Sili Valley and have worked for the community of Redwood Estates where I now am the Operations Manager in the community in which I grew up. I still part time roadie / stage manage for the Internationals Band where we typically perform 48 or so performances annually (pre-COVID) and have toured the band through Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (and the first and only band to March in the Munich Oktoberfest Parade in 1997, and 2007 out band known as the “Chico Bavarian Band” when touring Europe. I have been married to my wonderful wife Shelley for 33 years now. Shelley is a world renowned author, editor, and publisher who will obtain her doctorate in creative literature in July 2021 after her thesis defense on Father Rikers Holy City CA. We have no kids, just rescue chickens ( no tuition either). That’s about it for my Life Update. Sorry I will miss this reunion, but our band is playing Friday and Saturday nights October 1, & 2 at Teske’s in San Jose….

Mary Byrne – Sacramento

My career is winding down now, as I worked in the sciences and as an engineer…I teach science part time. I have a wonderful husband and daughter who is also a successful scientist. But none of our acheivements are more valuable than knowing oneself, slowing down to appreciate life and love!

Emmaline Roche – Redding, CA

Retired early & loving freedom. In a relationship with a Blues Guitarist & Recording Engineer. Take vacations with Ex-Husband/best friend. Beat Cancer 5 times & proud of it! Retired from Radiation Therapy treating Cancer patients in Ukiah, CA – working for my own Oncologist. Create metal art, jewelry, memory albums & voodoo/goth dolls. Practice Wicca as a full Witch & have a major background in the history of Wicca/Pagan life. Almost done with my Sci-Fi Novel with time jumping experiences based in the year 3021. And writing poetry enough for a book soon as well. Still following music after 34 years of a life of hanging out with musicians in the Bay Area & beyond. Life with bands was never dull; and it all started with Eclipse that included three LG classmates. Blessed Be to all of you & let’s have some fun together!

Robert (Bob) Leonard – Republic, WA

Remarried a year ago. have been retired now for three years, moved to Republic Wa. Every day is a new adventure in our lives. Living a much simpler and stress free life style. (off grid) we completed main house Build last Christmas on are 20 acres with a 100 year old cabin (Restoration) in the works.

Larry Ellsworth, Rocklin, CA

I have a beautiful family. My wife is a doctor of philosophy in education, is retired from the Air Force and also is a photo restoration artist. Three daughters all with amazing families of their own and professional careers. Danielle is a doctor of psychology, Lauren is a computer engineer and Mackenzie is starting her 3rd year in law school. The husbands they married are okay, I guess (just kidding, we love them all). Three grandchildren so far, Nova is 4, Kaya is 2 and Elise just turned one year old. Me? 25 years as a San Jose police officer, retiring as a lieutenant. I now work for the state Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. Almost retired from there as well. In about two years when I retire for good, I’ll have been in law enforcement for 44 years as a dispatcher, cop, traffic cop, sergeant, helicopter pilot, and lieutenant. My wife and I split our time between Rocklin (near Sacramento) and a small cabin in Maine on Highland Lake. Coast-to-coast trips are a common experience for us now but we truly look forward to spending time with our daughters and grandchildren. It’s been an amazing journey since high school and I hope with full retirement soon, it will be even more amazing.

Karen Weinman Trolan, Los Gatos

Oahu, Hawaii was a great backdrop to start a story book romance with husband Steve, now going on 38 years! We met when he was stationed there in the Army. After his tour of duty and great jobs, fun, travel and athletics, Steve and I chose to move back to the Bay Area to have and raise our 3 children as locals. All three kids went to LG schools and graduated LGHS. I retired young (in 2000) from leading Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate as their Senior VP/Regional Manager of Silicon Valley. Retirement gave me the opportunity to coach my kids’ competitive soccer teams, volunteer for LGMS Disaster Aid Response Team (DART), Volunteer for Ski Patroller at Northstar, do triathlons, martial arts and travel. However, I missed real estate and they lured me back in to manage again (after getting 2 of the 3 kids graduated). Once back in the Los Gatos Offices, I lead CB real estate while I continued raising my kids and keeping up my volunteer positions. Then, 12 years ago, my life changed in an instant! As a private pilot, I was flying our Cessna 206 from our Lake Tahoe home. The plane crashed and I was “smooshed”. I did recover, except for the residual spinal injury making me a paraplegic. However difficult, much to my surprise, my extremely active, athletic life was able to continue, some adaptively. Because of the challenges and opportunities, I wrote a book encouraging others since I found that “I Can Still Do It”. Today, my youngest works with me in residential real estate at Sereno, as the Trolan Group; representing sellers, buyers and investors. We so enjoy working with our clients fulfilling their dreams. And, I have time to travel with my family, represent my community on 6 different Board of Directors (several as an executive officer), and be a leader in LGMS DART. So yes, I lost the word “retire” in my vocabulary. My latest is writing a book on the current Martial Arts that I train in, in between an active real estate market, horseback riding, skiing (water & snow), ATVing and volunteering in our community.

Carol Gustafson, Monroe, WA

After getting a Business degree from Cal Poly SLO, I married a wonderful man and worked in HR. We lived in the Cambrian area until 1999 when we moved to northwest WA with our two sons. Unfortunately, my husband passed away four years later from cancer. This was definitely the most difficult time of my life. I decided to go back to school to become an RN, something I had considered since high school, but I was way too squeamish back then. It was fun being back to school, and I did become an RN at age 50 🙂 I remarried in 2010 to another wonderful man. Between us we have 3 toddler granddaughters who all live close by. They are all adorable, if I say so myself. I’m excited for our first grandson to arrive next month! My favorite role so far is being a grandma (or Coco as the girls call me). I recently resigned as a school nurse after 8 years. The reason I left this position was because we will be temporarily relocating to AZ for the next couple of years for my husband’s job as an engineer. We would like to set up a “snowbird” residence there, as winters in the northwest are getting old! Life has been a journey but has also been a blessing.

Joe Englert – Loomis, CA

After graduating from LGHS, I went to several music schools to get a professional job as a clarinetist. I did win some positions in local semi pro groups such as Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Jose symphonies. The best I got was finalist in San Francisco symphony. In my thirties I finally realized I needed to make steady income so teaching came along. Now I am retired, living very comfy and, as you can see by my little picture..RIDING BIKES. How much? Twice a day seven days a week. In fact, for a couple years, I would ride 100 miles every day in the month of May…don’t ask me why…now I am in the process of climbing one million feet by the end of October…don’t ask my why..just LOVE

Michael Moradzadeh – Marin Country, CA

Retired after 20 years doing tech and law, I’ve gotten heavily involved in sailboat racing, serving on a few US Sailing committees and racing my own boat in trans-Pacific races (winning our division in TransPac 2019). I married Noelle and live here with our cats. We support political and charitable causes we believe in.

Jayne Coates Bell – Los Gatos

After LGHS, I went to a Christian college for 2 years, now called Corban University, and then transferred to SJSU and graduated with a voice degree. I worked at HP for 20 years when I was laid off. I was then the Director of Worship at First Baptist Church of Los Altos, now called, Bridges Community Church, for 7 years and have now been working in the finance department at Stanford University for 12 years. I married my husband, Dean Bell, 25 years ago and we have one daughter, Laura, that was married this summer. We love traveling especially to Hawaii and other coastal views here in California. We get to see Susan (Day) Stein, ’76 and her husband David at our church frequently and I enjoy following our fellow LGHS graduates on Facebook. Keep on doing those interesting things!

Bryan and Kim (Moore) Dodd – Cottonwood, AZ

We have retired and moved to Northern Arizona to be closer to Kim’s parents in 2017. Our oldest son still lives in San Jose with 24/7 caregiving support provided by the non-profit we founded in 2002 called Trinity CHANGE. He has been able to successfully fly to visit us with his long-time roommate and friend so we can spend time together. He is non-verbal, but can type to communicate and has a wicked sense of humor. Our daughter and son-in-law followed us to N Arizona. We lost Kim’s dad to cancer in 2020, but we were able to have he and mom move in with us while he was on hospice last year. Mom has returned to Tucson, and is adjusting well to her single life after over 60 years of marriage. We are actively involved in our church, Bryan serving as an elder and Kim serving on the worship team playing keyboard, and continue to serve as volunteers on the board of directors of Trinity CHANGE, Inc. We enjoy camping in our RV, hiking the many trails that surround us, and our favorite day trip is to visit the S Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Eva Fox (Austin) – Lake Havasu City, AZ

After spending 26 years in the Army, 15 years as a professional Clown and 10 years as a Karaoke owner ( Yes the jobs all overlapped.) I am settled in Arizona after living in Northern California most of my life. I’ve lived in Los Gatos, Redding, Susanville, Vacaville, Novato, San Francisco, Sacramento and now am in Arizona. I grew up in Chemeketa park and left after my Freshmen year at Los Gatos High. I graduated from Shasta High School in Redding. I have 5 sons and 8 Grand children from 14 years old -11 months. We are at this time very involved with our local Elks Lodge. If you are not an Elk you should look into it. It’s a great organization. My husband is our Exalted Ruler year 2021-2022. It keeps me busy with my Mary Kay cosmetics and Colorstreet nail businesses.

Elise Franck – Placerville, CA

My life since LGHS… I’m so ashamed I haven’t done much more than complete a few college degrees. After 8 years of marriage, I went back to school, and completed more minor achievements as a student: a brown belt (sankyu) in Shotokan karate, and traveled briefly. I speak Spanish and French languages, I was licensed as a medical assistant and a MassageTherapist; I have 2 gorgeous, intelligent, motivated, professional daughters who each have a boyfriend, my eldest daughter UC Berkeley undergrad Harvard University graduate degree in public policy, (world bank projects to help the poor, clean water, small business loans) lives in Seattle with her boyfriend (a banker). My youngest daughter graduated with a degree in business marketing, and works at Fortune Builders in San Diego, and lives with her high school sweetheart (after they were apart from one another for 10 years, he stepped back into her life.) Yay! I’m so happy for my kids.

Sean Everton – San Jose, CA

I’m currently enjoying my 4th profession as a professor at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey where I specialize in disrupting terrorist groups (my daughter thinks I’m a spy). I live in SJ and commute to Monterey 2-3 times a week (at least I did before the pandemic). I secretly hope that I’ll add a 5th profession as a novelist, but I’ve discovered that writing dialogue is difficult, much harder than writing boring academic monographs (I’ve published three of those so far–you can find them on Amazon). I’ve been happily married for over 30 years to Deanne, who I met at Vanderbilt when we both were studying theology. Deanne is currently the Executive Director of Rebuilding Together, Silicon Valley (she’s been with them for over 20 years). She previously worked as an Executive and Regional Director for Habitat for Humanity. We have two great “kids”: Brendan and Tara. Brendan just finished law school at USF in the City (where our classmate Father Paul Fitzgerald is Prez) and following in his grandad’s footsteps is working as a tax attorney for Anderson Tax. Tara just graduated from UC Berkeley (with honors!) and just started a position with the Human Rights Foundation, which has offices in the Empire State Building. I’m thinking of dressing up as Buddy the Elf at Christmas and paying her a visit. The accompanying pictures capture a couple of our family’s “happy places”: Maui and PacBell (Oracle) Park. We try to get to both as often as possible.

Michael and Irene Flynn – San Antonio, TX

Howdy Y’All from Texas! After spending 32 years in the fire sprinkler industry in Los Angeles, I made a decision that I HAD to get out of LA or I was going to lose it! I was fortunate enough to be hired by the City of San Antonio, which I should mention, is a fantastic town. My wife, Irene, is an eight generation San Antonian, and she was extremely happy to be back home.
On a side note we will celebrate 30 years of marriage this next June. We have traveled extensively over the past 30 years – Every year we would visit Europe in April and Hawaii in November. I look forward to next April, when we will once again be able to visit France. I’ve also been sober for the past 32 years, which I’m extremely proud of! I’m really bummed-out that I will not be able to be there for the reunion, due to a previous commitment but I’ll be there is SPIRT!!! As I’ve said before – There will NEVER be another class like ’76. Love to all!

Renee West-Bailey – Sparks, Nevada

My high school sweetheart (Tom Bailey, LGHS Class of ’75) and I just celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary. We “retired” to Sparks, NV after his 30 year career with Santa Cruz PD and really enjoy living up here. I have been working in banking for the last 30 years and am looking forward to retiring in the next year or so. We have three grown kids and 3 grandchildren who all live here in Sparks, so we see them often. Our youngest child is marrying her high school sweetheart next February and planning the wedding is keeping us pretty busy.

Beth Linder Carr – Tollhouse, CA

My parents still live locally, but for a full half of my life now, I’ve been living and working in the foothills above Fresno, in a little town called Tollhouse. My daughter Zoë was born in 1993, and since I was teaching at the local high school at the time, she grew up in the school community, hanging out with me in my classroom, and eventually becoming my student. After her graduation, she moved to Massachusetts to attend college, and she still lives there, 10 years later. I remarried in 2008, and my husband Michael and I take care of our ten acres here, along with all of our “pets”: our border collie Ellie, three cats, three horses, a turkey, 12 chickens, five guinea fowl, and an aviary full of finch. For years I commuted by foot to my school, through an oak and bay forest, and I still get up before first light to take that walk. This past week we’ve seen some resident wild boar three times. I taught English, German, and theater while at Sierra High, and three years before retiring in 2019, I decided to go back to school, to pursue my dream to write. In May 2021 I graduated with an MFA in Creative Nonfiction, and I’m still writing daily, trying to remember my life. The essays in my thesis are about living on the edge of the wild, and about being a teacher and a mother, sometimes both at the same time. I was missing the classroom, so in the Fall of 2020, I started teaching German again, at the local junior college. It was all on-line at first, but this semester I’m able to meet with my students once a week for a few hours. So nice to be “Frau” again. The pandemic has kept me from seeing Zöe for almost two years now, so I’m excited to be taking a trip to Amherst on the Friday after our reunion. I’m looking forward to seeing those of you who are coming to the reunion. I’ve been to only two–the 10, and the 35. See you soon!

Karina Junge – Humboldt County

I’m happily retired from 30 years of teaching Middle School Science and enjoy living in a beautiful place where I take beach walks with my dogs nearly every day. We have about 20 chickens that keep us and our neighbors in fresh eggs year round and a bountiful fruit and vegetable garden. I wrote a curriculum for my masters thesis on California Creeks, a collection of lessons for students to engage in studying their local creeks and streams. Nature photography is my favorite hobby. I have a great Husband who hails from South Africa and one heir, no spare. My son is finishing up a degree in Electrical Engineering. Life is good!

Tanya Pole Giovacchini – New England

Many of you may not remember me as I was only in LG from my sophomore year on spending much of my high school years studying and in student government– aka boring. I’ve been a displaced Californian for 35+ years living mostly in the Boston area and now in New Hampshire on a lake looking for a place to spend winters. After UCBerkeley undergrad, I worked for Accenture where I met my husband Paul (Stanford basketball player). We both got our MBAs at Harvard and then pretty much stayed in Boston after getting married in SF. After 35+ years of working at numerous consulting firms, I stopped working in January and love it. I have two fabulous boys 29 and 31 both recently also getting MBAs. One is an equity analyst at Credit Suisse and the other runs his own start-up. The most recent fun in our lives is a race horse called Hot Rod Charlie- if you are a fan of racing root for him at the Breeders Cup in Del Mar on Nov 6. My son is part owner with some of his Brown football friends and they just got lucky. They donate a portion of their proceeds to Melanoma research. If you are interested in their story here is a video from NBC Sports. https://www.nbcsports.com/video/kentucky-derby-horse-hot-rod-charlie-fielded-group-college-friends

Cece Cunningham – Vermont

I’ve been living in Vermont for the last 40 years after coming here for grad school. But, now it is time to come home to California. My plan is to partially retire and work remotely, moving in with my mom in Campbell in the next year or so. Anyone want to buy a Vermont tax practice?

Shauna White – Nevada City, CA

After high school I got my AA degree from West Valley. Having competing in gymnastics since junior high I was part of the Jr. College team for a year then helped coach for a season. Finished my college degree at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo and loved the whole college life. I took out a college loan, and spent a semester backpacking solo thru Europe. Obviously no cell phones back then…just a book entitled “How to Travel Europe on $10/day”. After college I returned to Los Gatos/Silicon Valley working for The Le Baron Hotel SJ in Sales, a special events company and then landed a longer 20+ career in Industrial Trade Shows 1st for an Exhibit House that designed/fabricated exhibits, museums and traveling road shows for mostly high-tech clients. After 5 years I went out on my own as a Consultant and traveled to many major US cities and abroad managing programs/shows. 30 years ago I met my husband, Matt Orovitz, an engineer for IBM for 40 years and a graduate of Leigh High School. He joined me to fulfill my dream of bicycling across the US when dating on what was called the 1st US Bicentennial Route clocking over 4,300 miles. We eloped in Breckenridge Colorado on a ridge top with our bikes and promised to do a similar trip after our kids graduated from college. Maybe a few less nights sleeping on city park benches, floors of college bicycling shops with cockroaches, and alters of churches in towns with populations of 100 or less. Although…those moment are my favorites! Popped out two kids. Our daughter Danna (28) graduated from Davis and is now making the lives of our local homeless much better. A tall task! Our son Alex (25) just graduated from Gonzaga with a Mechanical Engineering Degree and landed his first job with Tectonics in South Carolina. We got to raise them here in the foothills of Nevada City in the forest. My 50’s were spent getting injured and recovering…knee surgery, hernia, broken bones, 4 major head concussions and then I fell 15’ landing shoulder/head first onto concrete and really doing a number on my back…not my best day. A family member once said…”you and your damm sports”. I have been recovering from that last accident for 8 years now. The skills I learned along the way to heal myself, I now teach others so they can also “get their lives back” and live pain-free. It’s so rewarding! This is the most I have ever written about myself…sorry but thanks for “memory lane” and I love reading what others have shared. Has it really been 45 years for us! Wow!

Tammy (Bramel) Davies – Auburn, CA

After graduation, I went to West Valley College and, after taking navigation and meteorology classes, I decided to become a pilot. I transferred to SJSU Aeronautics Department and joined a Flying Club (The Flying Aces), obtained my pilots license and instrument rating. I was working on my multi-engine license when the Airline Industry was turned upside down after the air-traffic controllers went on strike when I graduated in 1981. I began working with Lockheed Dataplan in Los Gatos and went to mother Lockheed in 1982. I spent the remainder of my 39 year career in Sunnyvale working numerous satellite launches for the DSCS and AEHF programs. I ended up flying satellites instead of airplanes for a living but, Launches never get old and I was part of 17 of them!!

Thompson Sharkey – San Jose

I got my Seaman’s Papers after High School and shipped out in the Merchant Marine, then went to West Valley College 78-80, UC Berkeley 80-82, UC Hastings 84-87. I worked for the Santa Clara County Public Defender from 1988 to 2014. I’ve been a self employed criminal defense lawyer since then. My office is in an old victorian right off of St. James Park in downtown San Jose.

Sue Boddy – Pleasanton, CA

I recently retired in April after working 36 years in Biotech. I have stayed local to the Bay Area and after graduating from UC Davis, I lived in Los Gatos, Fremont and now Pleasanton for the last 14 years. I met my husband windsurfing in the Delta in 1990. We have been married for 26 years. Our son graduated from UC Santa Cruz in 2019 with a degree in Computer Science. He is now working in Sunnyvale and moved out earlier this year. We have done lots of traveling on our summer vacations over the years, and enjoy camping, hiking, mountain biking and downhill skiing. Since I retired, I have been enjoying doing more of these things, as well as spending time with friends and family. I have been exploring and discovering more of the Bay Area hiking trails. I am looking forward to many trips and getting outside with my husband after he retires in a few months.
